Short answer: Night Eye Beauté (ナイトアイボーテ, sold in Japan by StreeTrend / M&M Inc.) is a liquid eyelid adhesive you paint along the crease line at night so the lid skin sticks to itself while you sleep, then soak off in the morning. Optifold is a two-piece nighttime tape system: an F-tape that sets the crease path on the closed, extended eyelid and an N-tape that supports the fold through the night, removed by peeling in the morning. Both are "wear it while you sleep, take it off in the morning" products. The differences that matter are glue versus tape, one generic product versus a two-piece system with placement guidance, and how each one is priced after the first month.

Why Optifold costs more than eyelid tape, and a fraction of double eyelid surgery

Most eyelid tape is made to be cheap and disposable: a strip that holds a fold for the day and goes in the bin at night. Optifold is built the other way round, as a premium nighttime system for people who want a double eyelid without surgery. This is what the price pays for.

  • A patented two-piece design. The F-tape sets the crease path and the N-tape supports the fold while your eye is closed. The construction is patented in Japan (JP6114471B2) and South Korea (KR101451199B1).
  • Made in Canada, from materials we name. Every Optifold tape is designed, manufactured and cut in Canada by a Canadian medical-tape manufacturer, from medical-grade, latex-free 3M tape. Many low-cost marketplace tapes say little about where they are made or what the adhesive is. We tell you both.
  • A free eyelid assessment. The Find Your Best Fit assessment looks at your eyelid type and tells you whether tape alone or tape with guidance is the better start, and our team helps you with placement.
  • Real people behind it. Optifold is an award-winning U of T startup, one of four winners of the University of Toronto's 2018 HealthEdge Challenge. Optional advisor programs (EyelidCare and Results Guaranteed) add video review and routine adjustments.
  • Proof you can read. Thousands of satisfied customers, Trustpilot 4.0 out of 5, and documented case studies with timelines: Cherry, Alycia and Megan's diary.

Optifold vs. the cost of double eyelid surgery

Option Typical price Source
Eyelid surgery, United States (upper blepharoplasty) US$3,359 average surgeon's fee, before anesthesia and facility costs American Society of Plastic Surgeons
Double eyelid surgery, Japan Suture method (埋没法) ¥20,000–200,000 per eye; incision method (切開法) ¥100,000–400,000 for both eyes rank-king.jp survey of 11 clinics, updated 1 April 2025
Double eyelid surgery, Korea Suture method (매몰법) ₩500,000–1,000,000; incision method (절개법) ₩1,000,000–1,500,000; about double in Gangnam isclinic.co.kr 2026 cost guide
Optifold US$49.99 for 4 weeks; US$119.99 for 12 weeks opti-fold.com, October 2026

In the United States, a 12-week Optifold pack costs less than 4% of the average surgeon's fee alone. Surgery is a medical procedure with anesthesia, a recovery period and a result that is hard to undo. Optifold is a cosmetic routine you do at home while you sleep: no incisions, no anesthesia, no downtime, and you can stop any night. It does not change the anatomy of the eyelid and results vary, which is exactly why many people try it before booking a consultation. More in Optifold vs. surgery.

Is Night Eye Beauté the same thing as Optifold?

No. They share a goal, a crease that is practised overnight so that it begins to show during the day, but they are different kinds of product. Night Eye Beauté is an adhesive liquid: you paint a thin band along the line where you want the crease, press the fold in with the pusher before it fully dries, and the skin above the line bonds to the skin below it. Nothing sits on the lid except a dried film. Optifold is tape, and specifically two tapes with two different jobs. The F-tape is placed along the crease path on skin that is gently extended with a mirror below eye level, chin up and eyes looking down. The N-tape goes on second and holds the fold in place while the eye is closed. No part of your skin is glued to another part of your skin.

That distinction decides most of the practical differences below: how it feels in the morning, how it comes off, how precisely you can control the crease height on each eye, and what happens when a product moves during the night.

How does Night Eye Beauté work, and how is it used?

According to the maker's instructions and the usage guides published by Japanese retailers, the routine is: cleanse the lids and remove oil and water; find the crease line with the pusher; paint thin layers along a band roughly 3–5 mm high until the surface looks glossy; press the pusher into the line for one to two minutes before it dries; release once the lids hold; sleep. In the morning you hold a warm towel on the eyes for about a minute and rinse with lukewarm water, using an oil cleanser on a cotton pad if residue remains. The maker recommends starting with a narrow crease, using the same line every night, and continuing for at least two to three months. Its product guide mentions six months or more.

The maker describes the product as "寝ている間に二重へ導く" (guiding the eyelid toward a double fold while you sleep). It also says the formula contains botanical extracts (peony, linden flower, arnica, althea root and cherry leaf) intended to help with puffiness and roughness, that it contains no ethanol, and that it dries clear. Those are the maker's claims; we have not tested them.

Two things Night Eye Beauté does well, in our reading of the reviews: the fine brush allows very precise placement of the line, and once set the hold is strong enough to last the night for many users. Reviewers on LIPS mention both repeatedly. It is also the best-known night product in Japan, with the largest review base in the category, and the first subscription month is cheap.

What is different about how Optifold works?

Optifold does not bond skin to skin. The F-tape is a shaped strip placed along the crease path on the extended lid; it decides where the lid folds. The N-tape is placed over it and supports the fold while the eye is closed, so the crease is held in the same position for the whole night rather than only for a few minutes. In the morning both tapes are peeled off in order, which takes under a minute and needs no soaking.

Because the two pieces are separate, placement can be adjusted per eye: a slightly higher F-tape on the lid with the heavier fold, a different angle on the eye whose crease drifts outward. This is the part of the routine that the Find Your Best Fit assessment and our advisors spend most of their time on, because the same tape in the wrong place does very little. The two-piece construction is what the Japanese and Korean patents cover (JP6114471B2; KR101451199B1; inventor Raymond Tang), and it is why Optifold was one of four startups awarded a US$7,000 prize at the University of Toronto's 2018 HealthEdge Challenge, where U of T News described it as "a special tape to encourage double eyelids".

The adhesive is a medical-grade 3M latex-free adhesive. Optifold is a cosmetic product, not a medical device, and it does not change the anatomy of the eyelid; what it is designed to do is practise one crease path consistently, night after night.

Which costs more per month, Night Eye Beauté or Optifold?

It depends on which month you are in. Night Eye Beauté's advertised first subscription delivery is ¥2,990 (about US$19), far less than Optifold's US$49.99 four-week pack. After that first delivery the picture changes: the manufacturer's list price is ¥8,580 for a 3 ml bottle (about US$54), authorised dealers on Rakuten and Amazon.co.jp were selling single bottles for ¥6,480 (about US$41) on 16 October 2026, and the maker markets one bottle as roughly a month of nightly use. Affiliate pages have quoted the ongoing subscription price between ¥3,600 and ¥4,290 in recent years; we could not confirm the current figure from the maker's page, which shows it only in images.

So, over a three-month trial, which is the minimum the maker itself recommends, the two products end up in the same price range: roughly ¥11,000–15,000 for Night Eye Beauté depending on channel, and US$119.99 (about ¥19,000) for Optifold's 12-week pack, which works out to US$40.00 per four weeks. Optifold is not the cheaper product. What the extra pays for is the two-piece construction, the assessment and the guidance; whether that is worth it to you depends on how much placement precision your eyelids need.

One more cost difference: cancelling the Night Eye Beauté subscription is done by phone or through the maker's member page at least ten days before the next delivery, and several Japanese review posts complain about busy lines. Optifold's packs are one-off purchases; the advisor programs are the only recurring items.

Can Night Eye Beauté give a crease that stays after you take it off?

The maker says the product guides the eyelid toward a double fold with continued use, and advises two to three months minimum. Reviews are split. On @cosme the product scores 4.4 on a 7-point scale across 778 reviews, with recent reviewers writing that the crease gradually took hold with continued use. On LIPS it scores 2.9 out of 5 across 592 reviews, and the most common negative themes are "no effect" or the lid "reverting to a single fold", stinging or redness in the first weeks, residue that is hard to remove, and the product coming off overnight. Several reviewers and Yahoo! Chiebukuro answers say thick or heavy lids respond poorly.

We cannot tell you how Night Eye Beauté would work on your eyelids, and we would be cautious of anyone who claims to. What we can show for Optifold is individual, documented cases: Cherry's uneven lids over several months, Alycia's move from mixed results to a stable crease, and Megan's diary through the discovery, training and steady phases. These are real cases, not averages; results vary, and some people see a crease that holds for hours before it holds for a day. If you want to know how long a crease typically takes to hold after tape removal, we wrote that up here.

Which is better for hooded or heavy eyelids, Night Eye Beauté or Optifold?

Heavy, hooded or puffy lids are where liquid adhesives are most often reported to struggle, because the weight of the skin above the crease pulls against a skin-to-skin bond. This is a recurring theme in Japanese reviews of Night Eye Beauté ("重い一重には効かない" is one of the most-searched questions about it). Optifold's F-tape and N-tape are designed to work on the extended lid with the N-tape providing support from below, and hooded and heavy lids are one of the eyelid types the product is designed for. That does not mean every heavy lid responds; it means the mechanism does not depend on skin holding skin. If your lids are heavy, do the assessment first; it will tell you whether tape alone is a reasonable starting point or whether you should begin with guidance.

Which is better when one eye is different from the other?

A liquid lets you paint a different line on each eye, so Night Eye Beauté can be used asymmetrically. The difficulty reported by users is repeating exactly the same line every night by hand, with a brush, on skin that is about to be pressed. With Optifold, uneven eyes are handled by placing the F-tape at a different height or angle on each lid, and the placement can be photographed and repeated. This is the situation our advisors see most, and it is the ideal case described for the Results Guaranteed program: one stable eyelid and one difficult one. Our article on one double eyelid and one single walks through the approach.

Which is gentler on sensitive skin?

Both products sit on eyelid skin all night, so both need clean, oil-free skin and patient removal. The specific complaints differ. For Night Eye Beauté the reported issues are stinging or redness while the adhesive is strong in the first weeks, residue that needs an oil cleanser, and dry eyes from sleeping with the lids held partly open. For tape systems, including Optifold, the risk is pulling the tape off too fast; the tape should be released from the skin, never ripped. Neither product is appropriate on broken skin, with an eye infection, after recent eye surgery, or on a lid that has started to droop on its own; see a doctor first in those cases. We are not claiming that Optifold is the gentler product; we can only describe what each one asks of your skin.

Can you use Night Eye Beauté and Optifold together?

Not at the same time, and not on the same night. Glue under tape changes how the tape sits and makes removal harder; tape over glue traps the adhesive. If you are moving from one to the other, finish removing all residue from the liquid, give the skin a night or two, and start the tape routine on clean skin. Using a daytime product for an event while you run a nighttime routine is a different question, covered in daytime vs. nighttime eyelid tape.

Who should pick Night Eye Beauté, and who should pick Optifold?

Night Eye Beauté makes sense if you are in Japan, you want nothing physical on the lid, you prefer a brush-applied line, your lids are on the lighter side, and you want to try a night product for a month at the ¥2,990 introductory price before committing. It has the longest track record and the most reviews of any night product in Japan.

Optifold makes sense if you want tape rather than glue on your skin, your lids are hooded, heavy or uneven, you want the crease height and angle to be adjustable per eye and repeatable, you want an assessment before you start, and you are willing to pay more per month for a two-piece system with guidance behind it.

If you are undecided, start with the free Find Your Best Fit questionnaire, read the instructions once, and compare that with the Night Eye Beauté routine above. Both products reward the same habit: the same line, every night, for months. The question is which tool you can repeat precisely.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get double eyelids without surgery?

There are two non-surgical routes: daytime eyelid tape, fiber or glue, which create a crease only while you wear them, and nighttime crease training. Optifold is a patented two-piece nighttime tape system, made in Canada from medical-grade 3M tape, designed to train a double eyelid crease while you sleep so that it starts to show in the daytime without tape. It costs a fraction of surgery, needs no incisions or downtime, and comes with a free eyelid assessment. Results vary from person to person.

Is Night Eye Beauté the same as Optifold?

No. Night Eye Beauté is a liquid eyelid adhesive that bonds the lid skin to itself along the crease line overnight and is washed off in the morning. Optifold is a two-piece nighttime tape system (F-tape and N-tape) that is peeled off in the morning; no skin is glued to skin.

Which is cheaper per month, Night Eye Beauté or Optifold?

Night Eye Beauté's advertised first subscription delivery (¥2,990 on 16 October 2026) is much cheaper than Optifold's US$49.99 four-week pack. After the first month, a 3 ml bottle lists at ¥8,580 and sells for about ¥6,480 at authorised dealers, so over a three-month trial the two end up in a similar range. Optifold's 12-week pack is US$119.99, or US$40.00 per four weeks.

Does Night Eye Beauté work on heavy or hooded eyelids?

The maker markets it to single and hidden-fold lids. Reviews and Q&A answers in Japan frequently say thick or heavy lids respond poorly, because a skin-to-skin bond has to carry the weight of the lid. Optifold's F-tape and N-tape are designed to work on the extended lid with support from below, and hooded and heavy lids are among the eyelid types it is designed for; results still vary.

Can you use Night Eye Beauté and Optifold at the same time?

No. Do not layer glue and tape on the same night. If switching, remove all residue, rest the skin for a night or two, and start the tape routine on clean skin.

How is Night Eye Beauté removed in the morning?

Per the maker's instructions: hold a warm towel on the eyes for about a minute, rinse with lukewarm water, and use an oil cleanser on a cotton pad for any residue. Optifold is removed by peeling: N-tape first from the inner corner outward, then release the skin from the F-tape and peel it from its tail.

Can Night Eye Beauté give a double eyelid that stays after you stop using it?

The maker says it guides the lid toward a double fold with continued use and recommends at least two to three months. Public reviews are split (@cosme 4.4 on a 7-point scale from 778 reviews; LIPS 2.9/5 from 592 reviews, 16 October 2026). Optifold publishes individual case studies with timelines rather than averages; results vary for any eyelid product and no product can promise that a crease will last for good.

Who should choose Night Eye Beauté, and who should choose Optifold?

Night Eye Beauté suits people in Japan who want nothing physical on the lid, prefer a brush-applied line, have lighter lids and want a cheap first month. Optifold suits people who want tape rather than glue, have hooded, heavy or uneven lids, want per-eye adjustable and repeatable placement, and want an assessment and guidance behind the routine.
