Short answer: D-UP Wonder Eyelid Tape (ディーアップ ワンダーアイリッドテープ, sold in Korea as 디업 쌍테) is a daytime double-sided tape. It is 0.09 mm thin, comes in Extra, Mild and Point versions, and is designed to hold the fold of an open eye in place all day under makeup; many people in Japan consider it the benchmark daytime tape, and we would not argue. Optifold is a two-piece tape system designed for the closed eye at night: an F-tape sets the crease path on the extended lid and an N-tape supports the fold while you sleep, and both come off in the morning. They are built for opposite halves of the day. To the question people actually type, "can you sleep in D-UP eyelid tape", the honest answer is that D-UP does not sell it for that, and a daytime tape on a closed eye is not doing the job either product was designed for.

Why Optifold costs more than eyelid tape, and a fraction of double eyelid surgery
Most eyelid tape is made to be cheap and disposable: a strip that holds a fold for the day and goes in the bin at night. Optifold is built the other way round, as a premium nighttime system for people who want a double eyelid without surgery. This is what the price pays for.
- A patented two-piece design. The F-tape sets the crease path and the N-tape supports the fold while your eye is closed. The construction is patented in Japan (JP6114471B2) and South Korea (KR101451199B1).
- Made in Canada, from materials we name. Every Optifold tape is designed, manufactured and cut in Canada by a Canadian medical-tape manufacturer, from medical-grade, latex-free 3M tape. Many low-cost marketplace tapes say little about where they are made or what the adhesive is. We tell you both.
- A free eyelid assessment. The Find Your Best Fit assessment looks at your eyelid type and tells you whether tape alone or tape with guidance is the better start, and our team helps you with placement.
- Real people behind it. Optifold is an award-winning U of T startup, one of four winners of the University of Toronto's 2018 HealthEdge Challenge. Optional advisor programs (EyelidCare and Results Guaranteed) add video review and routine adjustments.
- Proof you can read. Thousands of satisfied customers, Trustpilot 4.0 out of 5, and documented case studies with timelines: Cherry, Alycia and Megan's diary.
Optifold vs. the cost of double eyelid surgery
| Option | Typical price | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Eyelid surgery, United States (upper blepharoplasty) | US$3,359 average surgeon's fee, before anesthesia and facility costs | American Society of Plastic Surgeons |
| Double eyelid surgery, Japan | Suture method (埋没法) ¥20,000–200,000 per eye; incision method (切開法) ¥100,000–400,000 for both eyes | rank-king.jp survey of 11 clinics, updated 1 April 2025 |
| Double eyelid surgery, Korea | Suture method (매몰법) ₩500,000–1,000,000; incision method (절개법) ₩1,000,000–1,500,000; about double in Gangnam | isclinic.co.kr 2026 cost guide |
| Optifold | US$49.99 for 4 weeks; US$119.99 for 12 weeks | opti-fold.com, October 2026 |
In the United States, a 12-week Optifold pack costs less than 4% of the average surgeon's fee alone. Surgery is a medical procedure with anesthesia, a recovery period and a result that is hard to undo. Optifold is a cosmetic routine you do at home while you sleep: no incisions, no anesthesia, no downtime, and you can stop any night. It does not change the anatomy of the eyelid and results vary, which is exactly why many people try it before booking a consultation. More in Optifold vs. surgery.
Is D-UP Wonder Eyelid Tape the same as Optifold?
No, and this one is less about brand than about time of day. D-UP Wonder Eyelid Tape is a daytime product. The maker's listings say it "creates a clean, deep crease for all day wear", is "sweat and water-resistant" and "disappears into the skin"; nothing on the listings talks about sleep or about training a crease that stays. It goes on in the morning, hides under eyeshadow, and comes off at night. Optifold is a night product with two separate tapes, worn for about 8–9 hours while you sleep and removed when you wake. It is designed so that a crease practised at night starts to show in the daytime without tape; it does nothing for your appearance while it is on, because you are asleep.
The two can look similar in a photo: thin clear tape on an eyelid. Mechanically they face opposite directions. A daytime strip holds skin folded against the pull of an open, lifted eyelid. A night system sets and supports a fold on a closed, relaxed eyelid, where there is no lift to work against but also nothing to keep the fold in place except the tape itself.
How does D-UP Wonder Eyelid Tape work, and how is it used? (Extra vs. Mild vs. Point)
The method is the standard one for double-sided eyelid tape. On a clean, oil-free lid, the strip is placed along the line where you want the crease. You then look down or press the lid so the skin above the strip folds onto it, and the adhesive on both faces holds the fold when the eye opens. At 0.09 mm the strip sits under eyeshadow, and the maker says it can be trimmed to fit. The three versions differ in adhesive strength and length: Extra for strong hold, Mild for a gentler adhesive, and Point, a shorter strip for a partial-length crease (180 to the box rather than 120). "D-UP wonder eyelid tape extra vs mild" is one of the most-searched questions about the product; the usual answer in reviews is Extra for heavy lids and long days, Mild for sensitive skin or light lids.
D-UP earns its reputation. Among daytime tapes it is one of the thinnest and least visible, its hold through a working day is what Amazon reviewers praise most ("super strong adhesion and a very natural look" is the summary of the positive reviews), it costs around ¥1,000 a box in any Japanese drugstore, and it appears in a great many monolid makeup tutorials on YouTube. A Korean Threads reviewer in 2025 put it this way: even clumsy hands can apply it, it barely shows in photos, and it felt less like it was pulling on the lid than other double-sided tapes. If you want a crease for today, D-UP is a good tool for the job.
Its limits are those of daytime double-sided tape generally, and they show up in the same reviews. Amazon's review summary for the main US listing says it is "difficult to apply", that it "doesn't hold up well and becomes noticeable during daytime wear" for some users, that the grey-market price is high, and that "the instructions are not in English". The Korean reviewer added that heavy eyeshadow collects on a double-sided strip. None of that is unusual for the category; it is the trade-off for an invisible daytime crease.
Can you sleep in D-UP eyelid tape? (D-UP ワンダーアイリッドテープ 寝る時)
People do, and some Japanese ranking sites encourage it: rank-king puts D-UP Mild at the top of its "night tape" sub-ranking, but on the basis that its adhesive is gentle, not because D-UP positions it for sleep. D-UP sells no night version, and we found no overnight or training claim on any D-UP listing. So the honest answer has two parts. First, you can fall asleep with a daytime strip on and nothing dramatic happens for most people; the common reports are the strip shifting, a sticky or dry feeling in the morning and redness where the edge rubbed. Second, it is not doing much while you sleep. A daytime strip holds a fold against an open eye; on a closed, relaxed lid there is no lift to hold, so for most of the night it is adhesive sitting on thin skin under a pillow, and whether the line is still where you put it at 6 a.m. depends on how you slept.
That is the gap a night system is built to fill: the crease path is set on the extended lid before sleep, and a second piece holds the fold in position through the night rather than only until you turn over. What daytime tape does and does not do overnight is in can you sleep with eyelid tape on?, and the broader difference in daytime vs. nighttime eyelid tape.
What is different about how Optifold works?
Optifold is two tapes with two jobs, and neither is to make the eye look different while the tape is on. The F-tape is placed along the crease path on the closed, extended lid (mirror below eye level, chin up, eyes looking down) after you have traced the path 10–20 times to find it; it decides where the lid folds. The N-tape goes on second and supports the fold while the eye is closed, so the same crease is held in the same place all night. You hold the placement for 2–3 minutes once set, sleep, and in the morning remove the N-tape first, then the F-tape. If an Eyelid Advisor recommends it for your case, the F-tape alone can stay for 30 minutes to 1 hour at most.
Because the pieces are separate, height and angle can be set differently for each eye and repeated the next night, which is where the Find Your Best Fit assessment and our advisors spend most of their time. The two-piece construction is what the Japanese and Korean patents cover (JP6114471B2; KR101451199B1; inventor Raymond Tang), and it is why Optifold was one of four startups awarded a US$7,000 prize at the University of Toronto's 2018 HealthEdge Challenge, where U of T News described it as "a special tape to encourage double eyelids". The adhesive is a medical-grade 3M adhesive, latex-free. Optifold is a cosmetic product, not a medical device; it does not change the anatomy of the eyelid, and what it is designed to do is practise one crease path consistently.
Which costs more per month, D-UP or Optifold?
Optifold, and it is not close. In Japan a box of 120 D-UP strips was ¥909–1,100 on ranking sites on 16 October 2026 (some retailers list up to about ¥1,300). At one pair a day a box lasts two months, so the running cost is around ¥550 a month, roughly US$3.50. In the US the picture is messier: the long-standing Amazon listing for Wonder Eyelid Tape Extra sat at US$28.99 from a third-party seller, several times the Japanese price, while new 2026 listings for Mild and Extra were US$10.30–11.00 with no ratings yet. In Korea, importers listed the Extra at 12,100–14,600원 (about US$9–11). Optifold is US$49.99 for a four-week pack, about US$1.79 per night, or US$40.00 per four weeks on the twelve-week pack at US$119.99.
The comparison is slightly unfair to both sides, because the products are not bought for the same reason. D-UP is a cosmetic you keep buying for as long as you want a daytime crease: low cost, indefinitely. Optifold is bought in blocks of weeks with the intention of stopping: high cost and, if it works for you, finite. What Optifold's price buys, apart from the second tape, is the illustrated method, the free assessment that locates your likely crease path before you spend a night on it, and the option of advisor review through EyelidCare or the Results Guaranteed program.
Can D-UP give a crease that stays after you take it off?
D-UP does not claim it. Its listings describe all-day wear and a natural look, nothing about training or lasting change, which is the right claim for a daytime tape to make. Whether years of daily daytime tape leave a crease behind is argued both ways in forums; we have no data on D-UP specifically and will not invent any. What Optifold can show is individual, documented cases rather than averages: Cherry's uneven lids over several months, Alycia's move from mixed results to a stable crease, and Megan's diary through the discovery, training and steady phases. Results vary from person to person; the typical sequence (hours of hold first, then most of a day, then longer) is in how long it takes for a crease to stick.
Which is better for hooded eyes, or a crease that fades by noon?
These are two different problems. A crease that is there in the morning and gone by lunchtime is a daytime-hold problem, and that is exactly what D-UP Extra is made for; a thin strong strip under makeup carries the fold through the day, and it needs doing again tomorrow. A hooded lid that has never had a crease, or has one fold on one side and none on the other, is a crease-path problem, and no daytime strip addresses it beyond the hours it is worn. That is the case Optifold is designed for, with the F-tape on the extended lid and the N-tape supporting from below, and it is the situation our advisors see most. Our article on one double eyelid and one single walks through the per-eye decisions; if you are not sure which problem you have, the assessment is built to sort it out.
Can you use D-UP and Optifold together?
Yes, with one rule: not on the same lid at the same time. Some people wear a daytime tape such as D-UP for events, photos or work days during the weeks they are training with Optifold at night. The daytime strip comes off in the evening, the lid is cleaned of adhesive and makeup, and the night routine goes on as usual. Do not apply Optifold over a daytime strip or put D-UP on top of the F-tape in the morning; two adhesives stacked on an eyelid defeat the point of placing either precisely. If you use both, place the daytime strip along the crease path you are practising at night rather than a higher, more dramatic line, so the two are not pulling in different directions.
Who should pick D-UP, and who should pick Optifold?
D-UP makes sense if you want a crease today, under makeup, that survives a long day; your lids are hooded or heavy and need a strong daytime hold; you are in Japan or can buy at the Japanese price; and you would rather spend a few hundred yen a month indefinitely than a larger sum for a few months. It is thin, nearly invisible, strong, cheap and everywhere.
Optifold makes sense if your goal is a crease that shows without tape, you are willing to wear a two-piece system while you sleep for weeks or months, your lids are hooded, heavy or uneven, you want per-eye placement that can be assessed and repeated, and you accept paying several times more per month for a routine that is meant to end.
Many people will want both for a while: D-UP by day, Optifold at night. If you are weighing it, start with the free Find Your Best Fit questionnaire and read the instructions once; the assessment will tell you whether tape alone or tape with guidance is the better start.

Frequently asked questions
How do I get double eyelids without surgery?
There are two non-surgical routes: daytime eyelid tape, fiber or glue, which create a crease only while you wear them, and nighttime crease training. Optifold is a patented two-piece nighttime tape system, made in Canada from medical-grade 3M tape, designed to train a double eyelid crease while you sleep so that it starts to show in the daytime without tape. It costs a fraction of surgery, needs no incisions or downtime, and comes with a free eyelid assessment. Results vary from person to person.
Is D-UP Wonder Eyelid Tape the same as Optifold?
No. D-UP Wonder Eyelid Tape is a 0.09 mm daytime double-sided tape designed to hold the fold of an open eye all day under makeup. Optifold is a two-piece nighttime system (F-tape and N-tape) worn on the closed eye for about 8–9 hours while you sleep and removed in the morning.
Can you sleep in D-UP eyelid tape?
D-UP does not sell a night version or market the tape for sleep, although some users and Japanese ranking sites use the Mild version overnight because its adhesive is gentle. A daytime strip holds a fold against an open eye; on a closed, relaxed lid it is mostly adhesive resting on skin, so it may shift and is not designed to set or support a crease path overnight.
Which costs more per month, D-UP or Optifold?
Optifold. A 120-strip box of D-UP was ¥909–1,100 in Japan on 16 October 2026, about ¥550 (US$3.50) a month at one pair a day; on Amazon US it ranged from US$10.30 on new listings to US$28.99 on the main third-party listing. Optifold is US$49.99 for four weeks, or US$40.00 per four weeks on the 12-week pack.
What is the difference between D-UP Wonder Eyelid Tape Extra, Mild and Point?
Extra has the stronger adhesive for heavy lids and long days, Mild has a gentler adhesive for sensitive skin or lighter lids, and Point is a shorter strip for a partial-length crease, sold 180 to a box instead of 120. All three are daytime tapes.
What do reviews say about D-UP eyelid tape?
On Amazon US the main listing holds 3.7 out of 5 from 2,257 ratings (16 October 2026). The review summary praises very strong adhesion and a natural look; the common complaints are that it is difficult to apply, becomes noticeable later in the day for some users, is overpriced on the grey-market listing, and has Japanese-only instructions.
Can you use D-UP and Optifold together?
Yes, but not on the same lid at the same time. Some people wear D-UP for daytime events while training with Optifold at night; remove the daytime strip and clean the lid before the night routine, and never layer one over the other.
Which is better for hooded eyes, D-UP or Optifold?
For a strong daytime hold on a hooded lid that you redo each morning, D-UP Extra is made for that job. For a hooded or uneven lid that has no stable crease path, Optifold is designed to set and support the crease overnight with per-eye placement; results vary, and the free Find Your Best Fit assessment helps decide which problem you have.
Who should choose D-UP, and who should choose Optifold?
D-UP suits people who want a nearly invisible crease today under makeup at a low ongoing cost, especially in Japan where it is in every drugstore. Optifold suits people whose goal is a crease that shows without tape, who will wear a two-piece system while sleeping for weeks or months, and who want assessment and guidance behind the routine.
